” Get Creative ” consisted of many speakers discussing how we as the next generation needed to think of new ideas, manage and implement those ideas in relation to business. With business changing significantly every year a strong foothold on marketing these new innovative ideas is needed, Nigel Newmann our first speaker expressed this clearly as we were told to change how our mind works from simple equations to more creative ideas and how to do something with these ideas. Edward de Bono was then discussed which is the father of creative thinking. His thoughts on psychology were discussed which involved his book “mechanics of mind” and the fact that your brain is used to remember patterns in your memory but in fact for us to create new innovative ideas we have to leave behind our old routines and change our perception on things to be truly successful. This sense of perception was then discussed again as ” hare brain tortoise mind ” a book by prof perkins was discussed. this showed the vital information on looking beyond our perception and thinking slowly to encourage the brain to work efficiently, because most people know a hare is faster than a tortoise and therefore win the race but actually the hare loses as he acts to fast and loses his way while the tortoise moves slowly in the right direction, this represents the idea that intelligence works better in a slow pace. Throughout this whole lecture this was the re-enforced message, new creative ideas are about looking past your perception, past the simple logic behind ideas and expressing your mind in other unexplored areas. Another lecturer that contributed greatly to my own understanding of ” Get Creative ” was David Kaheman who expressed the knowledge of ” what you see is all there is “. All catergories of information are stored in our memory system as knowns which break into three sub groups, knowns, knowns unknowns and unknowns unknowns. these groups allow us to show the information we primarily know are knowns while knowns unknowns are things we try to understand or think of which is along the lines of thinking in a new creative way. Then there is unknowns unknowns which is completely a new way of thinking, ideas that could not be simply thought of, ideas that are far outside of thinking outside of the box. With these ideas a new judgement system was also discussed, a PMI which basically meant the positives, negatives and interesting. Then a simple table was drawn up on an idea that he announced ” that all cars must be painted yellow by law ” the positives and negatives are simple to think of but the key to new innovative ideas is the interesting side to the table as any questions could be asked like who would pay for it, how would law enforcement work and how would if affect society. These questions in my own opinion made the exercise fun but also got me into the mind set of thinking of the harder questions or other words unknowns unknowns. In my opinion one of the best features of this lecture was 6 hats that represented the judgement of your business idea, the white hat represents the data gathered from present and past resources and applying them to your idea. Then the red hat, you look at problems using intuition and emotion. Also try to think how other people will react emotionally. Try to understand the responses of people who do not fully know your idea.Using black hat thinking, look at all the bad points of the decision. Look at it cautiously and defensively. Try to see why it might not work. This is important because it highlights the weak points in a plan. It allows you to eliminate them, alter them, or prepare contingency plans to counter them.The yellow hat helps you to think positively. It is the optimistic viewpoint that helps you to see all the benefits of the decision and the value in it.The Green Hat stands for creativity. This is where you can express creative solutions to a problem in your design.The Blue Hat stands for process control. This is the hat worn by people in a higher position so they can give an opinion and control the outcome of this new innovative idea.With these hats it has allowed an efficient scanning of the idea and has enabled it to become a realistic product. A great way myself and the audience were shown to this new creative way of thinking was a small task we had, simply tear a hole in an A4 piece of paper so your body could fit through it, most people seemed puzzled and in fact when it was shown to us it was quite a simple idea but again the same message was expressed.. think past your perception ” up to 90% of error in thinking are in perception not judgement ” by prof perkins. Overall to sum up the information learned from this lecture it would simply have to be the fact that changing your own mindset is key to thinking and understanding new ideas also along with the help of PMI, the six hats and your knowns and unknowns.
